Wollam’s heavy civil construction team designed, constructed, and managed the delivery of an irrigation system, roadway upgrades, and road improvements in one weekend. This transportation infrastructure improvement project was completed by Wollam Construction for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) in June 2020.
IRRIGATION & INTERSECTION AMENDMENTS
PROJECT OVERVIEW
project brief
The intent of the project was to improve the intersection on an existing two-lane 55 MPH road that crossed over an existing irrigation canal. UDOT allowed a one-time weekend closure of the roadway from 6:00 PM Friday to 5:00 AM Monday. During the closure, Wollam demolished the existing concrete box culvert, installed an 8″ waterline loop under the new concrete box culvert, installed a new 112’ wide precast concrete box culvert, installed a waterproof membrane on the new box culvert, backfilled and temporary paved over the top to open back up the road to the public.
Following the closure, we began work on widening the existing roadway to account for the new turn pockets. This had to be worked in phases to ensure that two lanes of traffic could be maintained throughout the project. This scope included the relocation of fire hydrants, installation of 900 linear feet of 12″ and 18″ RCP pipe, place and compact granular borrow and road base, and the laying of a 6″ mat of asphalt. After the widening phases were completed, the roadway was chip-sealed and final painted striping was installed.s
