A Brief History of Mine Engineering

By March 14, 2016February 4th, 2020Mining Engineering

Mine engineering involves the theory, science, technology and application of extracting and processing materials from our environment. Our advanced and skilled mine engineers have experience in numerous fields, including electrical engineering and mineral economics. At Wollam Construction, we allow mining companies to mine more safely and efficiently to produce the materials they need with as little risk as possible. Our work is an integral part of the mining process that must be performed with close attention to detail and quality in order to find success with the project.

The History of Mine Engineering

Earth’s natural resources have been utilized to facilitate human living since the beginning of civilization. In fact, the oldest mine is the Lion Cave in Swaziland, which carbon dating shows to be about 43,000 years old.  However, major advancements of mine engineering are due to the ancient Romans who developed large scale mining methods like hydraulic mining. In addition, the industrial revolution saw further advances in mining technologies, including improved explosives, steam powered pumps, drills, and lifts.
